Our entire family has been infected with this extremely unpleasant disease. We contracted it over the Thanksgiving Holiday and literallly EVERYBODY who was at any of the gatherings we attended over that weekend contracted Shigella. We are fairly certain that the transmission of the bug was through the handling of my 1.5 year old son, who everbody was hugging/picking up. It lasted the better part of 2 weeks and was the WORST "stomach flu" type illness I have ever experienced. Fast forward to today 01-02-08, I have been re-infected somehow. The sysmptoms of diharea, nausea, and loss of bowl control have re-appeared with the same extremely rapid onset (1 day from feeling great to completely miserable). We followed the hand washing advice and stepped-up our efforts at cleanliness, both personal and around the house but this thing is tenacious in its grip on its victims. I think that someone needs to post what, specifically, the medical treatment being prescribed is and any other info that can stop this thing from spreading. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.
