Shigellosis cases are on the rise here in Fayette County, with 55 cases recorded so far, and it is one illness no parent wants to deal with.
Eight children were infected with the disease back in March. It started in a daycare and spread to a Versailles elementary school. Those cases are no believed to be connected to recent cases in Fayette County, but health officials say surrounding counties may also be at risk because more cases are expected in the coming weeks.
The most common symptoms of the shigella bacteria include blood diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps nausea and vomiting. Health officials say it’s important to subside. The bacteria may still be in your system and the infected person is capable of passing it onto others.
